Avani Lekhara’s name entered Indian sporting history at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where she won the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event with a Paralympic-record, world-record-equaling score of 249.6 — becoming the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal. At the same Games, she added a bronze in the 50m rifle 3 positions SH1, making her the first Indian female Paralympian to win two medals at a single edition of the Paralympics.

Three years later, at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Lekhara defended her 10m air rifle SH1 title, becoming the first Indian woman to win two Paralympic gold medals. The back-to-back victories cemented her position among India’s most decorated Paralympians in the sport of shooting.

Lekhara has competed as a wheelchair user since a car accident in 2012 left her paralyzed below the waist. She trains at the JDA Shooting Range in Jaipur and also holds a position as Assistant Conservator of Forests in Rajasthan, balancing government service with her competitive shooting career.
