Shekhar Naik was born completely blind in Arakere village, Shimoga district, Karnataka, a condition tied to hereditary blindness in his maternal family. He found his way into blind cricket, a sport adapted with an audible ball, and rose through the ranks of the national setup to be named captain of the India national blind cricket team in 2010.

Under his captaincy, India claimed two world titles: the T20 Blind Cricket World Cup in 2012 and the Blind Cricket World Cup in 2014. Those victories established him as one of the central figures in Indian blind cricket during that period, leading a team competing at the sport’s highest level.

In 2017, the Government of India recognized his achievements with the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honor. The award made him the first blind sportsperson to receive it, a milestone noted across the profiles and reporting on his career cited here.
