Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj has built a dual career that bridges the civil service and elite para-sport. Born on 2 July 1983 in Hassan, Karnataka, with a congenital deformity in his left ankle affecting his mobility, he went on to graduate in Computer Engineering from NIT Surathkal before joining the Indian Administrative Service in the 2007 Uttar Pradesh cadre, later serving as District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar and Prayagraj.
His path into competitive para-badminton began around 2015-16, while he was posted as District Magistrate of Azamgarh, after he was inspired to take up the sport seriously under coach Gaurav Khanna. That decision led to one of Indian para-sport’s most notable records: silver medals in men’s singles SL4 at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, making him the only Indian para-badminton player to win back-to-back Paralympic medals. Reports place him at the World No. 1 ranking in his category.
Yathiraj’s achievements have been recognized beyond the court as well — he is the only IAS officer in India to have received both a Paralympic medal and the Arjuna Award, a distinction that reflects his parallel standing in both public administration and competitive sport.
